How to Care for Your New Granite Countertops

Posted by & filed under Granite Countertops, Tips and Advice.

granite countertops hastings imperial countersIf you just had new granite countertops put in your Hastings home, then you might be wondering what you can do to keep them looking great. Here are a few tips on how to keep them looking their best for years to come.

  • While granite countertops are stain resistant, you should still make it a habit to wipe up spills as soon as possible after they happen. Liquids like water probably won’t stain, but dark liquids like red wine and coffee might end up staining your counters if you let them sit on the surface for too long. All you need to clean up the spills is a soft and dry white cloth and some water.
  • For everyday cleaning, you just need water and a soft and dry white cloth. Make sure you dry off the countertop surface after wiping them down with water. You don’t need to buy any special granite countertop cleaner if you don’t want to.
  • You do not need to worry about disinfecting your granite countertops. Granite is naturally non-porous so they will not harbor bacteria and germs.
  • Make sure you use coasters for glasses and mugs and use trivets or hot pads for hot dishes and sauce pans. This is a precautionary measure to ensure your granite countertops do not inadvertently end up damaged.
  • Use cutting boards any time you need to cut vegetables, fruits and other foods. Cutting your food on your granite countertops will not damage your counters but it will damage your knives!
  • Avoid generic household cleaners like ammonia, bleach or anything that is acidic. These types of cleaners can dull the finish of your granite countertops and cause other problems and blemishes.
  • Don’t allow anyone to sit or stand on your granite countertops, and don’t allow anyone to paint, glue or do crafts on them, even if you cover them with newspapers first. Even with protection on top of them, paint and glue can harm your counters and destroy the finish.

These are just a few suggestions on how to care for your new granite countertops. When we install your new counters, we can tell you even more about how to care for them. With the proper care and maintenance, your granite counters could last a lifetime!

How to Care for Solid Surface Countertops

Posted by & filed under Solid Surface Countertops, Tips and Advice.

After we are done installing new solid surface countertops in your Bloomington home, we will give you advice and instructions on how to care for them and keep them looking great for years to come. One of the biggest benefits of these counters is they are so easy to care for and maintain. So with a little bit of time and effort on your part, your new solid surface countertops will always look their best.

Only a daily basis, be sure to wipe them down with water and a soft cloth. If there is any dirt or residue on them, you can also use an ammonia-based cleaner, other than Windex, 409 or Fantastik. Just be sure to completely rinse and dry the solid surface countertops after you are done cleaning them with the cleaner. There are commercially available solid surface countertop cleaners on the market that you can buy if you want to. Just be sure to test a small and inconspicuous spot before you use them on the entire countertop surface, and be sure to follow the cleaning product’s instructions carefully.

If your home has hard water, sometimes that can leave spots on your solid surface countertops. Just be sure to wipe up the water and other spills as soon as possible after they get onto your counter to avoid those telltale white spots.

You can also disinfect solid surface countertops using 5 tablespoons of bleach in 1 gallon of water. Make sure you wear gloves and any other protective gear you might need, and make sure you rinse the counters thoroughly after you have wiped them down with the bleach solution. Be sure to dry them thoroughly as well so you don’t have to worry about any hard water spots.

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, your solid surface countertops will get a stain on them. However, this is nothing to worry about usually. Just wipe up the stain with some soapy water and a sponge. Use a little bit of elbow grease too and the stain should come off. Always scrub in a circular motion: that helps with stain removal as well.

With a little bit of care and cleaning, your solid surface countertops will look great for many years.

How to Care for Quartz Countertops

Posted by & filed under Quartz Countertops.

One of our specialties here at Imperial Counters is quartz countertops. Cottage Grove homeowners love this durable and beautiful engineered stone, and we are also big fans of it! When you have these counters installed in your home, there are a few ways you can keep it looking great for a long time. Here are a few of our favorite tips.

Quartz countertops are so popular because they are one of the most durable types of counters available today, and they come in a huge variety of colors and patterns. So you are always sure to find the perfect one to match your home’s décor and your own personal taste. To keep your quartz countertops looking their best, make sure you wipe them down with water and a soft cloth at least once a day. For everyday spills and messes, just be sure you clean them up as soon as possible after they happen.

If you spill something on your quartz countertops and it is difficult to wipe up for some reason, just use a nonabrasive sponge or cleaning pad. Rub at the spot gently and it should come right up. Just be sure you do not use steel wool (Brillo) or anything that could possibly scratch the surface of your quartz countertops.

While quartz countertops are heat and scratch resistant, we still recommend that you use a trivet and cutting board for hot items or for when you want to cut something on your counters. Taking a few simple precautions like this one can help ensure your new quartz countertops look good for as long as possible.

A few cleaning products to avoid include bleach or any cleaning chemical containing bleach, cleaners with a high pH level like oven cleaners and solvents or other powerful chemicals. You should also be sure to keep permanent markers off of your quartz countertops too. You will never need to wax or reseal your quartz countertops either. Your quarz countertops should stay nice and shiny without any help from special waxes or sealants.

With a few small tasks on your part, your new quartz countertops could stay looking great for many years to come. This is one of the many reason quartz countertops are a great investment!
